The Loopy Leprechaun Hat

 

This is a St. Patrick's Day variation on my free Elfitude pattern--a crocheted Dr. Seuss-style elf hat. I think it makes a great leprechaun hat in green.

This hat is made according to the pattern instructions, except the top point is tied onto the body of the hat a bit lower than the original Elfitude hat in red.

Lil' Punkin Hats

These are extra- and super-small sized versions of The Whimsical Witch-Hat pattern.  You can make a fast Halloween table decoration, centerpiece, or hat for a pumpkin.  The new smaller sizes are great for children, as well.

Here are the modifications to the pattern for these little hats:

1. Starting ring: for an 18" head circumference, ch 51; for 16", ch 48.

2. Brim: work only rounds 1-6.

The Whimsical Witch-Hat

This fast, easy hat is designed with a floppy brim as well as a flopped-over point. Whip one up for yourself, and another for your favorite pumpkin. (Shown with neckwarmer from the Witch Warmers pattern.)

UPDATE:  To make this hat, please use US size L / 8 mm--or the hook that gives you the correct gauge.  I have replaced the downloadable file with a corrected version.

FO Friday: A Funny Witch Hat

I got this hat done, and it's the final prototype for The Whimsical Witch-Hat, a free pattern which will be done in a day or two.  I just need to make the Small size to get the yardage and dimensions... Medium and Large are done.  The pattern document and schematic are pretty much done, also.

In the photo, I'm also wearing the neckwarmer from the Witch Warmers pattern.

WIP Wednesday: A Hat for Halloween

I know, this doesn't look like a work-in-progress (WIP).  But really, it is.  This is the second prototype for my upcoming free witch hat pattern.  The reason I consider it to be unfinished  is because it needs some tweaking, and I ran out of purple yarn and had to finish the point with brown.  The next  tweaks to the design will be to widen the brim and make the stripe lower.  With any luck, I'll have the pattern done in a few days.

Below is the first prototype.  While it looks pretty good flat, it looks very dumb on the head--the proportions just aren't right, and it's not stiff enough to stand up very well.  Also, this shot is of the back, showing the stripes' color change junctions.

Fortune-Teller Turban in Crochet

This is a crocheted version of the knitted Fortune-Teller Turban pattern. It's easy to make and easy to wear--no sewing, grafting, or blocking. It is crocheted in a simple, unusual technique that makes it flexible and drapey. The design was inspired by paintings of fortune-tellers from the Middle Ages.

The Fortune-Teller Turban can easily be arranged to cover the hairline or cover the ears, as you wish. Make one in cotton for warm weather and another in wool for winter.

U.S. crochet terms

Materials: uses US I / 5.5 mm crochet hook; 1 moveable stitch marker (optional).

Yarn: 200-250 yds / 183-230 meters worsted weight cotton, wool, wool blend, or acrylic yarn. The pictures show Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton worsted weight yarn. Other American brands of cotton, Wool-Ease wool blend, and acrylic yarn work fine in worsted weight, as well.

Gauge: 16 st x 15 rows = 5"/13cm x 5"/13cm in cotton worsted weight yarn; 16 st x 13 rows = 4.5"/11.5cm x 4.5"/11.5cm in wool, blend, or acrylic worsted weight yarn

Fortune-Teller Turban

The idea for the Fortune-Teller Turban pattern came to me when looking at paintings of Medieval fortune tellers. It's easy to knit and easy to wear--no sewing, grafting, or blocking. You can wear it to cover the hairline, pull it down over your ears, or push the whole turban back on your head. It can also be worn as a hood. Pattern includes detailed instructions and photos for how to put it on. With a twist and a flip, this turban practically arranges itself. Make one in cotton for summer and another in wool for winter warmth.
