The Whimsical Witch-Hat

This fast, easy hat is designed with a floppy brim as well as a flopped-over point. Whip one up for yourself, and another for your favorite pumpkin. (Shown with neckwarmer from the Witch Warmers pattern.)

UPDATE:  To make this hat, please use US size L / 8 mm--or the hook that gives you the correct gauge.  I have replaced the downloadable file with a corrected version.

  1. I love your witch hat. I plan on making one for myself and my 82 year old mother. Thank you for sharing. You have a great blog. Blessings.

  2. Hello! Thank you for the pattern. :)
I'm making this for a witchy friend.
Question: 8mm seems an awfully large hook for worsted weight yarn! I would usually use a 5mm hook. Is this definitely correct? As it's meant to be a stiff fabric I would think you'd want a chunky yarn and a smaller hook than you'd usually use worn a chunky yarn. Or did you use a double strand of worsted weight yarn?

    1. The stiffness of the hat will depend a lot on how stiff your yarn is, and how tight the stitches are. Making a gauge swatch will help you determine this. I did not use a double strand, but it might be the best solution for you. Good luck!

  4. Hi there

Just wondering why an 8mm hook for only worsted weight 4 yarn? That makes it a very loose weave? Or have I misunderstood? 😳 please help 🙈

    1. I'm not sure what you mean by "worsted weight 4" but the yarn used in the photos was Red Heart acrylic worsted weight. It's a fairly stiff yarn, and the hook listed (size L, 8mm) is what I used for getting the gauge in the pattern and for making the hats in the photos. I highly recommend that you make a gauge swatch with the yarn you wish to use, and see which size hook gives you what you need to get the gauge in the pattern. Good luck!
