Time to Get Serious...

There's definitely something powerful in having comrades-in-arms, and my blogger friend, A Polish Granddaughter, has inspired me to get serious about improving my health habits this year.  Last year, Hubbie and I dramatically improved our diet, but this year I need to stop playing around with it and finish the job.  That means more salads and less chocolate.

It also means getting seriously regular with yoga, walking, and weights.  I am now too old to be haphazard about it.  Anything like the flu or a trip, and I'm back to weakling status.  Must do better!

So this year, expect more healthy vegetarian recipes here on the blog.  Everyone needs to work out their own exercise habits, and mine are pretty mundane... when I do them.  Nothing blog-worthy there. But I am working on a new conversation with my Swedish friend, Absinthia, about the basics of living--green, clean, and who needs money, anyway?

  1. Love it!! Maybe you will make me brave enough to take a yoga class. I have always wanted to, but I have had scoliosis since I was small and I have always been afraid that I could not do the forms because of it. But if you go back to class, well, I can at least make a call and talk to an instructor to find out whether I can or cannot do yoga. I need a physical activity that has a spiritual component to keep me engaged. I am letting you once again inspire me.

  2. Okay, I just made a shopping list to make your Barely Borscht, Cabbage Soup, Chestnut Soup, Potato Soup and Pumpkin Soup. Can you tell I love soup in the cold winter months? I would love to think I could just make up pots of them to have over days, but realistically my family is going to want every one of them so I will have to be happy with one bowl of each. I agree about the jarred chestnuts - but I have to search them out again since my local farm store stopped carrying them. I love your recipes.

  3. Actually, I have never taken a yoga class in my life. My husband has taught me some, and finally he handed over his go-to book, which is very easy to learn from. It's "Yoga Self-Taught" by Andre Van Lysebeth from 1968.

I, too, have some limitations, and there are several of the poses that I had to avoid completely for a long time. I've been able to work my way up to them, but every time I have to stop for some reason like being sick or having a pulled muscle from doing something stupid, those few poses get shelved for again, and the process begins again.

I particularly like working on my own with yoga, because I can do it at my own pace and really pay attention to what my body is telling me.

    1. That's a good idea. I have some old yoga video tapes around here I think. I never opened them. Let me look . . . .

  4. A few years ago, I found jars of chestnuts online. This is not an economical recipe. lol Someday, I want to soak some pecans overnight, and see if the soup will work with that. With the pumpkin soup, I have successfully substituted butternut squash.

We love our soups, and they all freeze quite well.

    1. I gave Chip the ingredient list for when he goes shopping next. He asked what I was going to do and I told him I thought I would make them so that when the family was having a dinner I did not think was great for me - like pasta - I could have a bowl of soup. He looked at me like he was going to cry - and said "but I want the soup too". So looks like everyone will be eating the soup and I will have to make double batches if I want to have any set aside for me. Hah! Your recipe reputation precedes you in this house. We are doing a new Family Cookbook of the recipes that we use all the time - and the Maple Pecan Slaw is sooooo in our recipe book - with proper recognition to you of course. I think the Enchiladas will be next. :)

  5. Aw... I am honored that you all like this food. I have to extend a huge THANKS to my children and husband for eating many, many experimental meals leading up to these recipes.

    1. Do you have a Family Cookbook written down for your kids?

  6. I have thought about it... inspired by yours. But for now, this blog serves the purpose. My kids can access the recipes that are good enough to share, where ever they are. They have also sent their friends here to get recipes. lol
